ABOUT

Sonja Berg is an interdisciplinary artist from Richmond, British Columbia that explores the combination and interaction of different mediums. Experimentation is at the core of her artistic practice, creating hybrid mediums that produce dynamic, multi-layered and unexpected results.

Through a diverse range of mediums Sonja's work expresses and examines herself. Including her mental and physical well being, her doubts, fears, and anxieties, but also her passions and dreams. These themes have been explored through many combinations of mediums most notably photography, hand-drawn animation and interactive programs. Two of her animated shorts, Slip Away and Guilded Glass have been featured in the 2024 Student Okanagan Film Festival, and an original screenplay written in 2025 titled S8601 was published in the UBC Okanagan Paper Shell Anthology. In 2025 Sonja completed a series of 3 photographic works titled i could never be an architect: prologue, process, and interlude, which was a reflection of her personal journey as an artist. The work combines brutalist architectural photography collages which are presented as 3D sculptural artworks using different paper types and printing styles, mounted on recycled cardboard.

Sonja's current work addresses themes of self discovery and exploration in the creation of a pixel art platformer video game. Utilizing video games as an artistic medium for storytelling allows Sonja to combine her interests in animation, world building, and interactive design.

Sonja is currently completing her undergraduate degree in the Bachelor of Media Studies at the University of British Columbia Okanagan.
